Sexually Transmitted Disease

An estimated 5% of the adult population affected by STDs also has HIV infection. It is well known that risk of acquiring HIV infection increases to about 10% in people with current or prior STD. HIV vulnerability from STI is further increased as access to treatment and care for these diseases is very low, especially among the High Risk Groups. Under NACP III, a demand for STD service is generated through its awareness on one hand and on the other STI service is expanded through its integration with the Reproductive and Child Health Programme. STI/RTI services are being delivered through designated STI/RTI clinics, TI STI clinics, and a network of STI/RTI private preferred providers and NRHM at the Sub District facilities. Enhanced Syndromic case management with minimal laboratory tests is the cornerstone of STI/RTI management under NACP III.

Under NACP III, it is mandatory to strengthen all public health facilities as designated STI/RTI Clinic (DSRC) with the aim to have at least one NACO supported clinic per District. Presently Mizoram has 9 DSRC, two in Aizawl District and one each in the other Districts, providing STI/RTI services based on case management. There is one Deputy Director in MSACS to monitor and facilitate the programme implementation in the State. To strengthen the counseling and behaviour change among the STI/RTI patients one Counselor is provided in each of the clinics. 9 STI/RTI counselors are currently in position. The STI clinics have been branded "Suraksha Clinic", so as to increase the visibility and promote values of safety and prevention especially among women and youths.

The physical target of treating STI/RTI is distributed between NACO and NRHM supported Sub District Health facilities. Technical guidelines, training modules for Medical Officers and Paramedical Staffs for STI/RTI Services have been developed jointly.

Prepacked colour coded STI/RTI Kits have been provided for free supply to all Government STI/RTI Clinics, CHC/PHC and TI, NGO. These kits are dispatched by NACO.
