HIV/AIDS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN 3rd Quarter – October to December 2008

OCTOBER
1. Kristian Thalai Pawl, Ramhlun Vangthar, Aizawl : HIV/AIDS awareness campaign was held on 17th Oct 2008. Consultant (YA) was the resource person and spoke about the Basics of HIV/AIDS and the vulnerability of women and also the importance of spending a quality time with the family. About 50 – 80 youth member attended the program. The members were very active and the participation level was good and helpful.

2. Ist Bn. MAP Hqrs, Aizawl: HIV/AIDS awareness Campaign was held among the 96 newly appointed Police Personnel at 1st Bn. MAP Hqrs, Aizawl. Consultant (M) and DD (IEC) were the resource person. After the presentation interaction session followed where in questions from the audiences were answered. Some of the questions were :
1) How long can the virus survive outside human blood?
2) Is there a danger in touching the dead body of HIV infected person?
3) What is the reason behind, a mosquitoes not spreading HIV even though they suck blood from human beings?
4) How can the HIV positive person be suspected?
5) What are the signs and symptoms?
6) Can HIV be spread through kissing?
7) How to handle dead AIDS death cases?

3. PYD Ramhlun Vangthar, Aizawl : HIV/AIDS awareness campaign was held among the Church youth groups their Church hall. Around 50 – 60 youths gathered and attended the campaign. They were active and the responses were good.
Consultant (M) and DD (IEC) was the resource person and spoke about the Basics of HIV/AIDS and the vulnerability of youth and women. After the speech, there was interaction session where the members participated well and raised questions and answers were given. Some of their questions were –
1) What is window period?
2) How can the HIV infected person be recognize before receiving blood from the blood bank?
3) Is it better to reveal the HIV positive person than to undisclose it?

4. Students Union, NE Khawdungsei : HIV/AIDS awareness campaign was held among the students of NE Khawdungsei. There was a Youth program and a number of activities such as solo, group dance, drama etc, took place. In between the program, the awareness campaign was done by giving a speech on HIV/AIDS and youth vulnerability. CMO Office Champhai took the responsibility of the program and arranging Resource person.

NOVEMBER:
5. Kristian Thalai Pawl, Luangmual Aizawl: HIV/AIDS awareness campaign was held among the Church youth their Church Hall. Mr. Lallianzuala Consultant UNICEF was the resource person.
The resource person spoke about the concepts, origin, modes of transmission, how it cannot be transmitted, how to prevent oneself, etc. Also focus was given on the importance of keeping oneself always alert towards the means of transmission and decreasing the stigma towards the infected person. After interaction session questions were raised and answered. Some of the questions raised were;
1) Does saliva contain HIV?
2) How does HIV differ from AIDS?
3) Are all the pregnant women get HIV tested before their delivery?
4) Can HIV be spread through kissing?
5) How to handle dead AIDS death cases?

DECEMBER
6. Airport Group, Lengpui: HIV/ AIDS awareness program was included in the Young Mizo Association Group Conference among the Airport Group, Lengpui at Rawpuichhip Viallage. Around 400 youth gathered and HIV/AIDS topic was taken as an important topic during the conference. Apart from speech and group discussion on HIV/AIDS, booklet and Poster were being distributed.

7. Tuipuiral Zirlai Pawl, Farkawn ; HIV/AIDS awareness campaign was held during the General Conference among the Tuipuiral Zirlai Pawl at Farkawn Village. In between the program, the awareness campaign was done by giving a speech on HIV/AIDS and youth vulnerability. Few examples were given in order to draw the attention and to have a positive influence on the crowd. Unlike other campaigns, questions and answers session was not open as number of other activities was involved in the program.

8. Nursery Branch YMA, Aizawl: HIV/AIDS awareness campaign was held among the Nursery Branch YMA youth groups in their YMA hall. Many youth gathered showing their enthusiastic in pursuing more knowledge about HIV/AIDS.
There was interaction session where the members participated well and raised questions and answers were given. Some of their questions were –
1) How long can the virus survive in a syringe?
2) Is it true that the HIV positive women can give birth to a non infected child?
3) How long can the AIDS patient survive or what is the average life-span for an AIDS patient?

9. MHIP Rawpuichhip: HIV/AIDS awareness was held among the Women group of Rawpuichhip Viallge. Basics of HIV/AIDS and the vulnerability of women and he importance of spending a quality time with the family topic was stressed more. About 50 – 80 members attended the program. Discussions and suggestion session was held to take steps at their level in preventing HIV/AIDS and its spread.

10. YMA, Tanhril Branch Aizawl: HIV/AIDS awareness campaign was held among the youth YMA of Tanhril Branch. Topic on the concepts, origin, modes of transmission, how it cannot be transmitted, how to prevent oneself, etc were spoken by the Resource person and also focus was given on the importance of keeping oneself always alert towards the means of transmission and decreasing the stigma towards the infected person.
