In an effort to scale up the National AIDS Control Programme Phase –III, Ms. K. Sujata Rao, the Special Secretary & Director General, National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) visited the small state of North East Mizoram during 15th to 17th January, 2009.
During her 3 days visit, DG had a meeting with the SACS officials where review on all activities, progress and challenges of each of the programs were discussed in detail. She also visited several TI projects, service centers under SACS both in and outside the capital, Aizawl.
Furthermore, to increase and expand partnerships with Civil Services and state department’s, DG also met the Chief Secretary of Mizoram, Director, NRHM, other important officials and leaders of CBO’s - the Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizo Women Federation (MHIP), Elderly Association of Mizoram (MUP) and Christian Youth Fellowships.
At the Cultural Program, the DG insist on the officials and CBO leaders to take serious initiative in the fight against the spread of HIV and said that even though Mizoram manage to contain the epidemic, the trend of transmission has changed from IDU’s to sexual contact over the past couple of years. Therefore, she urged drastic measures be taken to further bring down the epidemic. She also requested the partners of SACS to give full cooperation saying that the State AIDS Control Society alone cannot win the fight against HIV and need their support to overcome the serious challenges faced.
